The new routes reduce the need for single occupancy car use. The more public transport options that are available on the Sunshine Coast the less people will need to use their car, which will help households to reduce their carbon footprint and overall vehicle emissions. On 4 May 2010 council introduced seven new Flexilink trial services across the Sunshine Coast region. Following a twelve month trial, on 30 June 2011 four Flexilink services ceased due to very low patronage. The Conondale, Peachester and Kenilworth services will continue to operate. An existing Flexilink service operates between Boreen Point and Tewantin. It was established by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (then Queensland Transport) in November 2006. In June 2007 council assumed future maintenance and delivery of the service. Although council is primarily funding these services, the Department of Transport and Main Roads has provided vital input and support for the initiative especially for the Conondale via Witta to Maleny and Peachester to Beerwah routes.
